Alcohol abuse, as most addictions, is a disease that can only be definitively diagnosed by the affected person. It physically impacts the diseased person in an uncontrollable manner and the consequences unfortunately affect the circle of family, friends, and community that surround the individual. Alcoholism presents itself as a mental, physical, and spiritual disease. There is no known cure for the disease, but there are very effective measures that allow recovery and a life that has never before been experienced or imagined by the recovering alcoholic. There is wide-spread support for both the abuser of alcohol as well as their family and friends. Two organizations stand out from the success of their programs in supporting the recovery process – Alcoholics Anonymous, for the alcoholic themselves; and, Al-Anon/Alateen that support recovery for the family unit. Information on Alcoholics Anonymous is provided here, while information on the Alanon and Alateen recovery groups are is provided on this CAAM web page.

Alcoholics Anonymous Background
Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. There are no dues or fees for AA membership; we are self-supporting through our own contributions. AA is not allied with any sect, denomination, politics, organization, or institution; does not wish to engage in any controversy, neither endorses nor opposes any causes. Our primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholics to achieve sobriety."
