As with other addictions, sex addictions bring with them shame, guilt, and isolation for those suffering with the disease. While the initial experience giving rise to the addiction may have been forced or accidental, the addictive behavior has been shown to grow over time until the addiction significantly impacts one’s life in a negative way. And, like other addictions, the impacts are not only experienced by the individual suffering from the addiction, but by also their family, friends, and community.
In the following are described sex addiction recovery programs that are patterned after the spiritual foundation and 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. If you have questions or are seeking to determine if you or a loved one is addicted, please consider visiting these groups’ websites and attend their meetings for further information. And, of course, you are welcome to attend our Catholic Alcoholism and Addictions Ministry meetings at St. Jude.

SAA Purpose:
Our primary purpose is to stop our addictive sexual behavior and to help others recover from sexual addiction. Recovery was possible for most of us only when we accepted the fact that we were powerless over our addictive sexual behavior and that we were incapable of changing without help from outside ourselves. Many of us came to this realization when we started attending SAA meetings. In that setting we heard stories similar to ours and realized that recovery from our malady was possible. We learned through the SAA Fellowship that we were not hopelessly defective.
We practice strict anonymity and confidentiality, so that our meetings are a safe place for all of us. Whom we meet or what is said in a meeting is considered as confidential. Our fellowship is open to women and men, regardless of age, race, religion, ethnic background, marital status, or occupation. We welcome members of any sexual identity or orientation, whether they are gay, lesbian, straight, bisexual, or transgender.

Sexaholics Anonymous (SA) Background
SA Purpose:
Sexaholics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength, and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop lusting and become sexually sober. There are no dues or fees for SA membership; we are self-supporting through our own contributions. SA is not allied with any sect, denomination, politics, organization, or institution; does not wish to engage in any controversy; neither endorses nor opposes any causes. Our primary purpose is to stay sexually sober and help others to achieve sexual sobriety.*
Sexaholics Anonymous is a recovery program based on the principles of Alcoholics Anonymous and received permission from AA to use its Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions in 1979.
